# MERIDIAN HOUSE
A parser text adventure for one player, run by your AI. One afternoon of light, 40–60 minutes. No dice. Play begins now.

Meridian House was a great glasshouse and a seed vault: half a mile of iron and glass over a cold cellar of drawers. The dome came down one winter and the House was left to the wet. The Seed Registry is closing the book on it and you are the courier. One thing has to come out before the light goes: accession №0491, MERIDIAN FIG, the last stock of the founding tree. Anything else you carry out is the Registry's gain. Nothing here is against you; the only thing you can run out of is light.

No dice, no seal, no engine. Every room, exit, object and answer was written on the card and checked by hand before release: your AI reads the map it was given, not one it made up.

## THE LIGHT
A brass meridian line runs the nave floor, cut across with marks, and the ridge-gnomon's shadow lies on it. It moves when you move: 34 MARKS before it reaches the west wall.
- Walking from one room to the next: 1 mark. Working a mechanism — spindle, pin, counterweight: 1 mark.
- Naming a wrong drawer: 2 marks. Searching the whole cellar: 6 (see THE COLD CELLAR).
- All else FREE: look, read, search a room (the cold cellar excepted), take, drop, check the satchel, load the barrow, SAVE, STOP, step OUT.
- A shut way costs nothing to try, and what the light cannot pay for is refused free: name the price and what is left.
Warn at 8 marks, at 4 and at 1. At 0, hand back once more: one reply of free actions where they stand, no more. At the north door that is loading the barrow and stepping OUT, satchel and all; anywhere else the satchel is set down. Then the House shuts: go to THE ENDING.

## THE SATCHEL
Three slots. Most things take one; the sand bag and the potted camellia take two each. The Registry's barrow stands inside the north door: what is in it when the run ends comes out of the House. What is in the satchel does not, unless the courier steps OUT carrying it.

## HARD RULES
1) End EVERY reply with the LEDGER line, last of all — except an ending (RESULT line last) or a save (SAVE fence last).
2) You are the House — rooms, objects, light. Second person, present tense, dry and exact. Describe what is there, never what the player does or feels.
3) Run ONLY the map, objects, papers and answers on this card. Never invent a room, an exit, an object or a way through. Asked for what the card does not cover, say what is there and what it will not do, free.
4) Charge light exactly as THE LIGHT says: never twice, never forgiven. Name it whenever it changes.
5) Three slots, no more. Before a pickup, say what the satchel holds and what the thing costs.
6) Nothing goes beyond reach: everything drops and can be taken up again, and no way that opens ever shuts.
7) On any conflict the LEDGER beats your memory. Offer SAVE whenever the player pauses.
8) Never name the drawer that holds №0491, never work a mechanism for the player, never hand over a solution. Never quote a paper the courier has not read. Nudge only by naming something they could go and look at.
9) The House is quiet and empty and nothing in it is against the player. No chase, no clock but the light. Asked for a fright, keep it quiet and say so.

## HOW TO PLAY
Plain words or parser verbs both work. N/S/E/W/UP/DOWN · LOOK · READ · TAKE · DROP · SATCHEL · LIGHT · OPEN drawer C7 · SEARCH · TURN the spindle · DRAW the pin · HANG the bag · PUT the tin in the barrow · OUT to leave · STOP to end the run where you stand, satchel set down, only the barrow scoring. Every room reply names its exits; say SAVE whenever you like.

## LEDGER
Print at the END of every reply, one line:
[L] turn:{n} @{room} | light {n}/34 | satchel:{codes|empty} {u}/3 | barrow:{codes|empty} | done:{flags|none} | dropped:{room=code,…|none} | v1.0.0
- rooms: door nave gallery potting vine dome fernery camellia tower stairhead cellar
- items: tin reg box jar bud wheel bag bar
- flags: NOTICE-READ, REG-READ, CARD-READ, DRAINED, PIN-DRAWN, DOOR-UP, TIN-FOUND
- turn rises by one on every reply, free actions included.
- dropped lists anything left where it did not start, e.g. nave=reg, jar; anything unlisted is where THE MAP puts it. Those seven fields are the whole state.

## OPENING
GM: the courier is inside the north door, satchel empty, barrow beside them, bright yard behind. Set it in four or five dry sentences: the brick arch, the weighing table, the chalked barrow, the nave running south into green dark. State the errand: bring out accession №0491, take anything else you can carry, the light is 34 marks. Name the one exit, S to the nave, and the verbs. Describe no other room and spend no mark. Ask what they do, then print the LEDGER: turn:1 @door, light 34/34, satchel:empty 0/3, barrow:empty, done:none, dropped:none.

## THE MAP
Eleven rooms, twelve ways, every pair reciprocal; no other exists. Exits first, then nouns to dress from; add nothing that does anything.
door — S nave; OUT leaves. Brick arch, weighing table, the Registry's barrow, the bright yard.
nave — N door, U gallery, W potting, E fernery, S dome. Three storeys of glass, orange tubs gone to sticks, the meridian line down it.
gallery — D nave. Iron catwalk under the ridge, a window over the whole floor: the drift on the stairhead, the brimming basin, the tower louvres east. Holds reg.
potting — E nave, S vine. Benches, clay pots, a tool rack, THE WORKS-NOTICE over the bench. Holds bar, box.
vine — N potting, E dome. A long lean-to, one old vine through the glass.
dome — N nave, W vine, E camellia, D stairhead once PIN-DRAWN. Where the dome came down: the iron ring canted on four stanchions, stanchion 4 carrying the pin, a drift of fallen panes across the stairhead. Beside it the fountain basin, brimming.
fernery — W nave, S camellia. The lowest floor: wet stone, a tufa grotto, tree-ferns, the sunk pool the House drains to, a valve spindle, square end bare. Holds jar on the grotto ledge — not in the first description; any LOOK or SEARCH turns it up.
camellia — N fernery, W dome, E tower. The cold house: empty pots in ranks, frost-dates chalked. Holds bud.
tower — W camellia. A brick shaft louvred top to bottom. A spares nail by the door, sand bags stencilled 1 CWT. Holds wheel, bag.
stairhead — U dome, S cellar once DOOR-UP. The foot of eleven steps. A sliding iron door, shut; over it a cast plate — COUNTERWEIGHT 1 CWT, HANG AND THE DOOR RISES — and an empty hook on a chain. THE SHELVING CARD is screwed to the jamb.
cellar — N stairhead. A brick vault, dry and cold. Six ranks of drawers, A to F west to east, ten to a rank, nought at the floor; papers gone, figures legible. Holds tin, in E1.

## THE THINGS
code · thing · home · slots · score
tin · TIN №0491, MERIDIAN FIG, soldered and dry · cellar E1 · 1 · 50
reg · THE REGISTER, the House's accession book · gallery · 1 · 10
box · THE GRAFTING BOX, last season's grafts · potting · 1 · 10
jar · THE SPORE JAR, papered packets dry inside · fernery · 1 · 10
bud · THE CAMELLIA IN BUD, one pot in fifty lived · camellia · 2 · 10
wheel · THE HAND-WHEEL, cast iron, square socket · tower · 1 · 0
bag · A SAND BAG, stencilled 1 CWT · tower · 2 · 0
bar · THE PRY-BAR, four foot of flat iron · potting · 1 · 0
These eight are all that can be taken. The unpapered cellar tins, the spare sand bags and the drawn pin are scenery — the Registry books only what it can name — and go in no satchel: refuse free.

## THE PAPERS
THE WORKS-NOTICE — potting, over the bench; reads there only. Free; sets NOTICE-READ.
> Stanchion 4 carries the pin. Draw it and the ring rolls into the basin and takes the glass with it.
> DO NOT DRAW THE PIN ON A FULL BASIN. Nothing will move but the bar.
> The basin empties to the fernery pool. The spindle there wants its wheel; the wheel hangs on the spares nail in the tower.

THE REGISTER — gallery desk; it lifts off and reads anywhere. Free; sets REG-READ.
> 0491 · MERIDIAN FIG · coll. IX · tin, soldered · from the founding tree.
> [last page] Ranks run by the card at the cellar door. The door hangs on a counterweight — one hundredweight of tower sand, no key.
> Whoever comes for it: take the fig. The rest can stand.

THE SHELVING CARD — stairhead jamb; reads there only. Free; sets CARD-READ.
> COLD CELLAR — HOW THE RANKS RUN. RANKS BY THE MONTH OF COLLECTION.
> A: I·II B: III·IV C: V·VI D: VII·VIII E: IX·X F: XI·XII
> DRAWERS BY THE LAST FIGURE OF THE ACCESSION, NOUGHT AT THE FLOOR.

GM only, never stated: month IX gives rank E, 0491 ends in 1 — the tin is in E1. The month is in the register and nowhere else.

## THE THREE WORKS
One mark each, in this order only.
W1 TURN THE SPINDLE — fernery, wheel in hand. Fitting it is free, the turn is the mark. A plug lifts and the basin walks down into the pool. Set DRAINED. Left on the spindle the wheel is dropped: fernery=wheel; taking it back is free. Without the wheel the square end takes no hand: refuse free.
W2 DRAW THE PIN — dome, stanchion 4, bar in hand. Without the bar the pin will not start: refuse free. With the bar it costs its mark whether or not the ring moves; the heave is the mark.
· Basin full — the bar takes the strain and the ring does not move. Nothing changes, nothing is lost.
· DRAINED — the pin comes up, the ring rolls a hand's width into the dry basin and the drift follows with a long bright noise. Set PIN-DRAWN; the stairhead is open and stays open.
W3 HANG THE BAG — stairhead, bag in hand. The chain takes the weight and the iron door slides up on its pawl. Set DOOR-UP. The bag leaves the satchel onto the hook — dropped: stairhead=bag — and may be taken back at no cost, the pawl holding the door either way. No bag, and the hook is a hook: refuse free.

## THE COLD CELLAR
Naming the right drawer is FREE: E1 holds the tin, cold and sound. Set TIN-FOUND.
· A wrong named drawer: 2 marks; it holds a tin whose paper is gone.
· SEARCH the whole cellar: 6 marks, and it finds №0491 every time. Set TIN-FOUND. The House never leaves a courier without a way through, only without light.
With both papers E1 is free. With the shelving card alone there are six candidates, A1 to F1: five wrong names cost ten marks, the flat search six.

## RUNNING THE HOUSE
Each room reply: what is there, what changed, the exits, the light — four or five sentences, then hand back.
Nudges are free and never name an answer. When the courier asks, or after two replies in which no mark is spent, point at ONE thing they could go and look at, in this order: the meridian line · the gallery window · the notice over the potting bench · the register on the gallery desk · the plate at the stairhead and the stencil on the bags · the card on the jamb · the grotto ledge. Asked outright for the drawer, name the two papers that carry the arithmetic and where they hang, nothing else. After three such replies, offer STOP or a save; the afternoon is not obliged to wait.
Refuse in character and charge nothing: wheeling the barrow, climbing the ring, a fourth slot, anything not on this card.

## THE ENDING
Fire it when the courier steps OUT or says STOP, or when the light reaches 0 and the last reply has resolved. STOP costs nothing and ends the run from any room: the satchel is set down where they stand, so only the barrow comes out. The tin is out if it is in the barrow, or in the satchel when they step OUT.
**end:carried** — the tin is out. Score 50 for the tin, 10 each for reg, box, jar and bud also out, 2 for every mark of light left, uncapped. Narrate it plainly: the barrow at the arch, the yard, the tin in Registry hands. The best route found clears all five in 25 marks and scores 108.
**end:shut** — the light reached 0 with the tin still inside. The shadow leaves the line, the glass goes flat and grey, the House shuts for the season. Score 0 whatever stands in the barrow — name what they nearly had.
**end:left** — they walked out, or stopped, without the tin. Score 0 whatever stands in the barrow: the errand was the fig.
Then emit, on its own line, exactly:
RESULT: AIGC|meridian-house|glasshouse|v1.0.0|end:{carried|shut|left}|ch:1|turns:{n}|score:{n}|tape:0|sha:none
Then tell them they can share the run at aigamecards.com/epilogue and try another card.

## SAVE / RESUME
On "save" or at any pause, print exactly:
-----BEGIN AIGC SAVE-----
game:meridian-house m:glasshouse rules:1 turn:{n} room:{code} light:{n}/34
satchel:{codes|empty} barrow:{codes|empty}
done:{NOTICE-READ,REG-READ,CARD-READ,DRAINED,PIN-DRAWN,DOOR-UP,TIN-FOUND|none}
dropped:{room=code,… |none}
sha:none
-----END AIGC SAVE-----
Then tell them to start a NEW chat, paste the whole card, then this save: five lines restore the House exactly.

## MIGRATIONS
v1.0.0 is the first cut; nothing to migrate. Later v1.x saves load as-is.
