Opens ChatGPT or Claude with the play prompt ready; press send if it hasn't started. Same link on your phone as on your desktop. Another app? Copy the play prompt into it. This game needs a chat that can open links: its answers stay in a sealed file on this site. What works where.

The game card is every rule of the game, about 13k characters, but not its answers: those stay in a sealed file on this site, so even pasted, Slow Thaw: Hangman Without the Gallows needs a chat that can open a link. Pasting the answers in yourself would spoil it. The Skill installs Slow Thaw: Hangman Without the Gallows into Claude on any plan: download it, then turn on code execution under Settings → Capabilities and add it at Customize → Skills → + → Upload a skill.
Slow Thaw: Hangman Without the Gallows is a free word game you play inside ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. An AI hangman game for kids: eight words sealed before you guess, and a snowman instead of a gallows. 1 or more players, 20–30m a run. No signup and no app — open it in your assistant, or paste the play prompt anywhere else.
How to start
- Open it in your AI. Tap Open in ChatGPT or Open in Claude and press send, or paste the play prompt into any assistant that can open links. No paid plan required.
- The first word appears. The AI fetches the sealed words, prints the start of the SHA-256 commitment published before release, and shows the first row of blanks.
- Guess one letter at a time. A wrong letter thaws one part of the snowman. Say "the word is …" when you know it, and once three parts have thawed you can buy the word's clue for one more.
- Verify the seal. After the eighth word the AI gives you the sealed file's address. Copy its text, from SOLUTION to the SALT line, into aigamecards.com/verify to confirm no word moved.
Questions
- Can ChatGPT play hangman?
- Not reliably on its own. Plain chat has nowhere private to keep the word: a model may pick one, but by its next reply that choice is gone, so it fits its answers to your guesses. A 2026 paper, LLMs Can't Play Hangman, proves that an AI working only from the visible conversation cannot keep a word both hidden and fixed, and its authors watched ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude pretend to hold a word in November 2025 tests. Models can also slip on letters, partly because they read text in chunks of several letters called tokens; a 2024 study found that writing each letter separately helps. So this card seals all eight words before your first guess, each spelled out letter by letter, and the card tells the AI to look every letter up rather than spell the word from memory. The seal proves no word moved, not that every ruling was right: the board is printed every turn, and "check again" has the AI re-check your guessed letters against the sealed file.
- Why a snowman instead of a gallows?
- Hangman's picture is an execution. Teach Starter, a teaching-resource site, suggests swaps such as a disappearing snowman or a rocket, and quotes a teacher who uses alternatives because "you never have a complete picture of all the kids' backgrounds". Here each wrong guess thaws one part of a snowman instead: hat, scarf, carrot nose, coal buttons, stick arms and three snowballs. The guessing is classic hangman, with eight parts to lose and a clue you can buy for one part once three have thawed.
- Is this a good hangman game for kids and classrooms?
- Yes. It is built for one screen and one team: a child, a family, or a class with the teacher typing. The eight hangman words are familiar ones, spelled the same in US and UK English, and they run from nine letters down to five; shorter words are usually harder. The card tells the AI to keep the snowman a thing: it never talks, suffers or gets a name. Nothing asks for a name or any personal detail. A game takes about twenty to thirty minutes, and you can save after any move and carry on later.
- What if I think the AI got a letter wrong?
- Say "check again". The card tells the AI to re-check the letters you have already guessed against the sealed file and fix a mistake either way: a part taken wrongly comes back, and a letter wrongly allowed is taken off, which costs a part. It is told not to look up a letter you have not guessed yet. The card also has it re-check each word before the word ends. For words 1 to 7 you can still ask about a word right after it ends, before your next guess: each letter it wrongly called a miss adds a point back to that word. Word 8 ends the game, so its check is the one before it ends. Afterwards, the whole sealed file can be checked at aigamecards.com/verify.
- Does the chat have to open a link?
- Yes. The AI fetches the sealed word file from aigamecards.com when the game starts, and pasting it in yourself would show you all eight words. Not every app can open links, and that changes; aigamecards.com/launch-matrix shows which currently do. If the chat can't, the card tells the AI to say so and stop rather than make up words. No account or paid plan is needed. At the end the AI lists the eight words and gives you the sealed file's address: copy its text from SOLUTION to the SALT line into aigamecards.com/verify, which rebuilds the commitment in your browser. If the words don't verify, that run wasn't the sealed game.
