Riddles & lateral thinking puzzles for ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini

Updated

Riddles and yes/no mysteries whose answers are sealed before you guess — the AI rules from the file, not from whatever sounds plausible. Free, no signup. Each game is a ready-to-play prompt (we call it a game card) that you open in your own AI assistant.

A riddle game with an AI is fair only when the answer was fixed before you guessed. On these cards every answer — each riddle's word and the forms that count, or each lateral thinking puzzle's hidden story — is sealed under a SHA-256 hash before release, and the assistant checks you against that file instead of agreeing with whatever you argue.

Can an AI host riddles and lateral thinking puzzles fairly?

Ask an assistant for a riddle and it has nothing fixed to hold your answer against. Argue for an alternative and it will usually concede; ask it for a yes/no mystery and it invents the hidden story while you question it, so its answers drift and the solution becomes whatever fits your last guess. Neither failure is visible from inside the chat.

These cards are written answer-first. Twelve Chimes seals each riddle's answer, the forms that count, the wrong answers people commonly give and three hints. Nothing Uncanny seals each case's story, the facts that settle the usual yes/no questions and the points a solve has to state. The assistant fetches that file when the game starts, so the chat has to be able to open a link, and it rules from the file: a riddle answer that is not on the list is wrong, and a question the case file leaves open gets a fixed reply rather than an invented fact.

The seal proves the answers were fixed before your first guess; rebuild the hash at /verify/ after the game. It does not prove every ruling was right, because a host can still misread its own file, so the whole file is yours to read when the game ends. Twelve Chimes is a twenty-minute Halloween set for all ages. Nothing Uncanny is six yes/no mysteries for adults and teenagers, about an hour and a half, and a group can play it at one screen.

Questions about riddles & lateral thinking puzzles

What is a situation puzzle?

A yes/no mystery, also called a lateral thinking puzzle. The host knows the story behind a strange scene, and you ask questions it may answer only yes, no or irrelevant until you can tell the story yourself. It needs someone who already knows the answer, which is why it works with an AI only when the story is fixed in advance. In Nothing Uncanny each case has a budget of forty: a question costs one and a solve attempt three, so firing off every theory at once does not pay.

What if my riddle answer fits but isn't the sealed one?

It is ruled wrong, and the host cannot add an answer mid-game; that is the point of sealing. Before release each riddle went to independent test solvers, and a further pass listed what children, British and American players would say, so the accepted forms cover the answers people actually give. An answer counts wherever it sits in your sentence.

Are they suitable for children?

Twelve Chimes is: all ages and no gore, with the first riddles written for a nine-year-old and the last three turning on wordplay. Nothing Uncanny is rated 12+, because its cases involve deaths and crimes told plainly; nothing gory or supernatural happens and no child comes to harm. Neither card asks for a name or any personal detail.
